"DESERTROPOLIS" AT BURNING MAN 2010 : A 10 YEAR RETROSPECTIVE

Art installation DESERTROPOLIS : City in the Desert was created for Burning Man 2010. Marking the first large scale sculptural installation by AGRISCULPTURE Amy (then Amy Lewis aka Freebird on the playa) the mission of DESERTROPOLIS was to provide an oasis to guests at Burning Man. In contrast with the super techy vibe of most camps, vehicles and installations, DESERTROPOLIS was a nod to ancient Arabic times... where passive cooling design strategies were employed in desert architecture to facilitate human comfort without the use of electricity. Bastikiya - wind towers - were hand crafted by Amy Lewis in Los Angeles and installed in Black Rock City to provide Burners respite from the Elements and a quiet spot for reflection within the festivities.
